Life as a Negotiator

*I have the privilege of watching a movie for free in university some time last year. Is about negotiation (on life-death matters not those commercial). It was a great movie, the plot has it own twist in it. At the end of the movie, there is a guest speaker who will relate the movie content and the real-life experience. And here is some of the takeaway that I had. [p/s: Like my previous post, CSI is still one of my favorite drama series, so it is a no surprise that I enjoyed the session  :) ]*.

When negotiating, bring up open-ended question and importantly, listen their statement without judging them. When dealing with this life and death matter, one will need to build up rapport with them, to generate the trust among the both of them. Some basic idea about negotiation:
   ·         Never make a promise
(   As at the end, the offender will discover the truth that you won’t be fulfilling his ultimate request, and loses the faith in you.
   ·         Never be ‘deceptive’
   ·         Build rapport

Who are involved in a negotiation?
It is usually the local police commander that liaises closely with the negotiator and the negotiator will keep close contact with the technical people. It is not encouraged to change negotiator as the first negotiator has already build the rapport with the offender. Whether the negotiation is make or break, it all boils down to the senior negotiator, as he or she is the one who call the shot and it often based on the negotiator experience and not the police.

What happens during negotiation?
The negotiator will adopt the container negotiation approach, where the taskforce will quarantine the public with the ‘crime scene’, so that the offender is isolated with the public to reduce any further stimulation.

When the negotiator arrived to the location, the commander will brief the negotiator before the negotiation commences. This is important for the negotiator to understand the background of the offender, so the negotiation can be themed around the heart of the issue. Like mentioned, it is crucial not to be judgemental, instead, be objective and independent, so that one emotionally connected to it and thus easier to conduct the negotiation.

Meanwhile, negotiator will communicate with the commander or with psychologist if necessary using written notes to avoid communication disruption with the offender.

Who can be a negotiator?
Negotiator is usually a detective or a sergeant, one need to be on call so that they could head to the location directly. They are usually in their causal wear, able to keep calm and not rushing as these create pressure on the offender.

Since negotiator is a high stress level job, it usually comes in part time position and in rotation basis.

What it takes to be a good negotiator?
   ·         Communication skills is a must
   ·         Tolerance
   ·         Empathy
   ·         Patience (Especially you might need to talk to them for 14 hours straight or more)

It is not necessary to have a tertiary education to be want as negotiator needs more soft skills than the technical knowledge. Yet, various policing experience will be of great help during negotiation as one have witness all kinds of humanity from the best to the worst.

How to be a negotiator?
The recruitment of negotiator usually will be announced through internal portal, and you will need to go through 3 weeks training. You also will go through medical and work history check, and also any complaints filed against you. It is also vital for you to understand the your stress management capability.

NSW has this policy of not having force entry during the invasion. At the moment, NSW has done a great job for not having death in custody.

It is never easy to be a negotiator as ethics always come into place.  One has to always be remembered to never expense anyone, if forced to, do the greatest good for greatest number of people.

Reflection on Movie: Chef

Ever since I am studying in Sydney, I dont often go to the theatre for movie. Sole factor: price ~>.<~
Yet, I got a free movie voucher as a staff gift from the office, so I head to the cinema after work, despite I have to walk for nearly 20 minutes to the nearest cinema :))

Watched Chef alone, at the back of an empty theatre, well, literally empty since there is only a couple of people occupying each of the 5 out of 7 rows. Needless to mention about the storyline, since Goolge helped quite a bit. Quoting from IMDb:

Chef Carl Casper suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner, he is left to figure out what's next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife, his friend and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen -- and zest for life and love.
I would say this story draws one of the ideal life one can get. In fact, it is these kind of attitudes and courages that one will be encourage to have. I being a pessimistic person, but trying real hard not to, I always thinks that it is not impossible but it is hard. This is about losing control on one's life, when things just go wrong, nothing works out, you dropped hard on the floor from the height etc. And in a certain way, it does reflecting what had happened. The magnitude might not be as great as this, but it al depends on individual's life and perspective, and I could say that the pattern of it is definitely similar.

So, thoughts for the movie that I like, learned and realized:
1. Social media today is incredibly powerful, it can brings you up, and no doubt, it can throws you down. The power of sharing, retweeting, and is all about what others think (Might or might not be the fact of an issue). Is a double-edged sword,

水能载舟,亦能覆舟

2. Words hurt. Even more than the physical pain. The worst part of it, you cant argue with it verbally (referring to passive communication using words). You cant clarify it immediately, even you attempt to make correction to it immediately, because it subject to whether did the recipient read it.So be mindful with the words.

3. Friendship. Ideally, your best friend/supporter will be loyal to you, follow you and support you all the way through. Even if you are in deep sh*t. From the movie, you can see that one of the chef buddy has followed him and the other one didnt. Being emotional, you can say that the other one is a coward or doesn't value the friendship, but think about it, rationally, in reality, how many of your friends will do the same? Moral of the story is, treasure those friends that really back you up! (Doesnt mean that the rest are no body, just show extra appreciation to those will do so.) 帮助你是人情,不帮你是道理。

4. Dad, an influential individual. Regardless you are the daughter or the son, both parents definitely have certain influence over you. Here comes the biological inheritance, DNA talk etc. Besides this movie, backing up from other reality shows clips, parents occupation and future do highly influencing the child's future prospect, in particular, dad. He is the one that overpowering the potential path of their children.

5. Time spent together/Communication. Is all about the moment that you had with someone, be it father-son, husband-wife, employer-employee or all other sort of relationship. Time + communication. A definite combination for maintaining relationship. Especially when we are referring to those who really matters to us. Once neglected and ignored, there goes the relationship. From the movie - one second of everyday.

6. When you fall, think of why you started it. After the soaring heights, we tend to lose ourselves, being distracted with the fame, power, respect etc that we earned throughout. In an unfortunate event, once you fall, it is devastating. Now, it is about standing up from the mud despite the heartbreaking moment. Recall the reasons you chose the path, the reasons you made that choice. If you cant go further, revert back and start from the beginning, and work all the way up again.

7. There is no eternal enemy. Although you have been through a nasty moment with someone, being hurt or 'humiliate', there is no need to keep that negative feeling deep down. Because these guys, in future might be the one that help you out when you most needed. Put it in another way, the past is past. Look forward to another kind of meet up in future with your 'enemy'. (P/s: if he or she hurts you again, just ignore him/her and by pass them, your time worth much more than having to hate them).

8.Opportunity will come. There is never a dead end (unless you died). Keep looking out for opportunities! Even a small one! When you have build up the skills and accumulate the experience, better things will come along. Like the saying "Opportunity will come to those who are prepared".

9. Do what you like and trust yourself. Do what you enjoy and be the expert of it! Even if you fail, you know that your passion towards it will make you a pro! Like one conversation between the chef to his son - I might not be a good husband, I might not be a best father, but I am good in this, real good. I am good in what I do (cant remember the exact phrase, but something similar). All about confidence and self-esteem you have, and never afraid of climbing up again when you are at your worst. (Like the scene where he dine in in Miami with his exwife and ex father-in-law)

10. The working world. When you are out there, working for someone, the most you can do is to suggest, whether to do it or not, it all depends on your boss/owner of the business (or sometimes, your customer). Let just face it! You have no say, unless you are the boss. Welcome to the reality, the hard cold fact.

Btw, the food really looks good on screen, so make sure you had eaten before the show stars, otherwise, you will be drooling all the way till the end ;)

#99 Appreciation: Malaysia

*Ignore politics*

A place rich with culture, resources and food.
We have great delicacies, dances, celebrations, languages and also a fusion of everything. Is just the unique scenario and experience to have. No one can understand "Eh Kawan, jom Dinner kat restaurant ABC, dai kor kata tu ho jiak", if you are not one of them or staying long enough to understand the 'languages'

Is a great place to stay with, with different ethnicity friends, hanging out together, learning each other languages, eating each other traditional home-cook meals, celebrating each other festivals... Is just a colourful journey!

The sad fact she is being gradually 'destroyed' by those who are ruling her...

p/s: The death of 8 years old Yemen girl on her wedding night with her 40 years old husband news is a heated topic lately. To add on, I just feel glad that I am not born in that sort of society and I am healthily raised by my beloved family today.

#92 Appreciation: The Present

Past - A paint in your life journey that last forever.

Present - A scenery that you are looking at.

Future - A daunting/exciting/adventurous/uncertain/forward-looking thoughts

I like the example that someone told me before. "Who you are today is not determine by your past, but is your future that determines who you are today. For example, after days of working, you booked a tour and you are so hype up when the tour date gets nearer because you are looking forward to the trip! However, during the tour, you dont fully enjoy yourself because you keep counting the remaining tour days and dont feel enthusiastic anymore because you are going back to your routine."

I was pretty astonish when I heard that 'theory', and couldnt against that because it is somewhat a fact. Then, one simple thing that pop up into my mind... During the present, the simplest (yet the most difficult thing to do) is to be satisfy with what I have today and what makes me today. At this time, this moment, I decide what I feel, what I think and what I do.

#90 Appreciation: Fears

I hate fear, and I really do. I dislike the fact that because of fear I dont get to achieve what I want in mind.

A quote from TinyBuddha.com, one of things to be grateful in life is fear, because:
So you know your opportunities for growth
I agree to it, and why is it so is because we should view it from a more positive sense that fears can be an indication on what one is lacking in. We might not be a perfect being in life, but one thing for sure, when we can overcome the fears we had, we will experience additional joyful moment and improve who we are today.

#89 Appreciation: Happiness

To me, most of my happiness derive from food! Oh well, although this is not the case.

But it made me realized that small little thing in life can simple cheer one up, is up to how a person perceive things as well as the desire of getting/achieving it.

Why food? Simple thing being able to order the food that I want when dining with parents' friend, being able to get the drink that I long as part of the staff meal, being able to grab additional piece of my favourite cookies when sharing with friends...

Happiness is priceless, and most of the time it wont cost much if we can think from a different perspective. Success built on efforts, happiness built on mind/way of thinking.

#88 Appreciation: Teachers

Teachers, especially those who deals with juniors and adolescence, are those equipped with strong mind and enormous amount of patience. They are the one who add on value to the patch we chosen and to guide us through with their knowledge and expertise. I never thought that teachers can have such impact on one's life, until I reflect and discover that who I am today is a result of my teachers faith in me.

When I was the class monitor, I was strict about the rules and always written down the name of the students who chat. I was so strict and “heartless” that portion of my classmates dislike me and complain to the homeroom teacher about it. Yet, my homeroom teacher back me up saying that "She is the class monitor, and she has the duty to make sure the class in quiet when teachers are not around. If everyone is whispering, the accumulated whisper will then become noise.". This incident made me has the strong feeling to carry out my duty in order, despite that people may dislike what I am doing. (Well, we cant please everyone in life dont we?)

Another incident is when my language teacher acknowledged my creativity via my indifferent style of writing during an essay writing competition. Because of her, I have more confidence in my creative writings and believe that I could express my view although it will be indifferent from the rest (and being against by the judging panel.)

There is always negative incidents after the positive ones - including politics and favouritism. Yet I believe due to these "lessons" and faith instil in me, I have became who I am today, a better person today.

#85 Appreciation: Pair of Legs

Like my hand post, same appreciation goes to having a pair of legs.

I am much fortunate as compare to Nick Vujicic physically, but mentally he is much better than I am. I am grateful that with my legs, I am able to walk freely, run happily (well, not really, dislike running >.<), and jump madly. I have no issue with stairs, narrow lanes, bumpy road etc. It is just a pleasure to being able to lead a life with convenience.

And my absolute respect to those who overcome such difficulties in life!

Like man says, an ordinary life is a happy life.

#84 Appreciation: Pair of Hands

I have my 2 normal hands "attached" on me since I am born :)
Thanks to my mum and my dad too for the normal genes.

Without this pair of hands, life will be tough. Is a fact, and it will then challenge my mind and soul to keep my life moving forward. Is not impossible, but though. Real tough. At times, I pity my hands and fingers... "Abuse" by myself, chipping nails, paper cuts, callus (from the extreme amount of writing) and all the cutting injuries, due to my un-feminism in dealing with kitchen stuff.

Like robot, hands just ease my life -- handling, writing, eating, cooking, bloging, washing whatever! Nothing I can do without them!

Sorry for the constant torture guys!

#82 Appreciation: Babies

Babies are like a piece of white cloth. White cloth that is ready to grow and discover the colourful world.
Pure and innocent. Greed for air once they born and no one can stop them from crying out loud. Is just a fascinating moment. Not to forget, mum's struggle and hardship while delivering the baby.

They symbolize hope, energy, new, youth, future... And they always react directly, being honest and true to themselves. Silently observing the surrounding and absorbing like a huge piece of sponge. That's the reason why adults need to be wary about the happenings around the baby. Babies never fail to remind me about the positive hope about being living as well as the greatness of parents to bring them to life and educate them as they grow.

Btw, arent all babies are such adorable that none of us can resist? Their sweet, cute, chubby, lil 'thing' does not fail to cheer me up (well, not when they are crying >.<)

#80 Appreciation: Adaptability

I believe that one of the human strength is being able to adapt into different geographical area, climate, social groups and life.

It is amazing that one can survive in different countries with diverse people that have various interest in life. I dont think anyone cant go along with anything, rather, it is just one's interest and preference to do so or not. We are gifted with such ability. Unlike certain plants that only grown in tropical area or unlike animals that only survive in certain area, we human being can be found everywhere in every nook and corner in this world.

Arent we such an incredible creation? (By the God perhaps? since it is unexplainable XD)

#79 Appreciation: Speech/To Speak

I am grateful that I can speak! *Yeah* And I dont have any speaking disorder.

I glad that I did not put my parents through all the hassle and worries by just being a normal kid, growing up to be a better person. Given that I am being brought up in a multilingual family, being able to converse, and even more, converse in different language and dialect made me a person who have another competitive edge in living in this world.

#73 Appreciation: Kindness

There is a Cantonese saying "It's kind to help, but it's also reasonable not to". This statement pinpoint that one should not take anyone for granted just because he or she "suppose to" do so. There is also a need to consider the context as well as the culture and the upbringing of oneself and the other party.

This thought train me to be independent and not to expect help from others. It might sound pathetic but looking from another perspective, it magnify one's help when they offer and I will be much grateful on what's happening and in return doing something good for the next person.

One of the simple things that touches my heart recently. I have a large package with reasonable weight that I have to retrieve from A location which take about 40 mins public transport ride from my place. After retrieving the package, I have to head to B location for a formal networking dinner. I am expecting and prepared to carry that package by myself with heels from A to B. At location A, I met with members from the same society and I kiddingly asked him a favour to help me to carry that package back. After trying to lift the package, he is fine to help me with that since he is not going to Location B (Btw, he carried the package by public transport as well.). This is an unexpected help that I am offered, and I really really appreciate his kindness in doing so as it meant quite a lot for me. At least I wont be carrying 3 bags (which I originally have with me), in a suit and heels with extra large package.

A kind offer doesn't occurs often, so never take anything for granted and thought that anyone suppose to do anything for someone.

#72 Appreciation: Mother Nature

The amusement and the energy that one could receive from the Mother Nature, is something unexplainable and the experience is beyond describable. Could be due to my shallow vocabulary, but to narrate the beauty or the power of Mother Nature is not as easy as ABC or summarized by a few sophisticated words.

Is just like the Universe, it could be explainable in certain scientific ways but that doesnt conclude everything about Mother Nature. Just some random (meaningless?), complicated thoughts "Why does the air in the Earth, constitute approximately 20% of oxygen?""Why is there water?""How did the Mount Everest come about?"...

Mother Nature is like a mysterious woman (since is 'Mother' Nature XD), that no one can fully comprehend. We admire her beauty, and also have taken advantage of her with our innovation and technology. She give us the natural scene that we long and the ease for us to survive. She is just incredible.

#64 Appreciation: Dream

Similar to creativity, dream is one of the aspect of life that most of us consciously neglect but subconsciously in the heart still longing for it. Like many said, dream (the one that you experience when you sleep) implies that your mind have been constantly think of it that it still "hunt" you down when you are sleeping. Similar to other context, dream is a goal, a state that we want to achieve, but yet to be start of or is hard to accomplish.

I have mentioned about dream in my previous post before the start of the 100 days project, and has featured a meaningful  video that discuss about how we can achieve the 'far far away land'... and one of the takeaway is to step out of the comfort zone. Easier said then done. The first step of stepping out from the complacent is often the hardest, followed by adapting it and not retracting after encountering with the first downfall/obstacle.

I realized my problem in realizing my dream... Not the first step, rather, is to sustain throughout the phase of working towards my dream (especially not being told off by the public and general perception). To all dream achiever, I salute your resilience and determination, as for those who struggle, we shall work together to reach our 'dream' (which is not going to be a dream soon!)

#63 Appreciation: Wishes and Blessings

In conjunction to Eid Mubarak, a festival celebrated by our Muslim friends today, it reminds me the importance of the wishes and greetings from our friends and families. It is abstract, but their presence, care and blessings, can be the best emotional and spiritual support when I am down.

Six degrees of separation. A theory describe about human connection. With this theory, apparently the we know everyone in the world, somehow directly or indirectly. Knowing is one thing, being friendly and thoughtful is another. Having hundreds and thousands of friends on Facebook, how many of them who genuinely send their regards and just wanted to know how have you been doing? How many of them remember your birthday, or even with Facebook reminder, they actually bother to wish you 'Happy Birthday'?

We cant force people to wish us, but one thing for sure, we can be grateful for those wishes that we received and be the one who care for them as well =))

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri my friends!!

#62 Appreciation: Creativity

Creativity is precious! It is an element that lead to a different tone of life. When refer to creativity, I am not restricting it to the art sense of creativity, but rather is an ability to think on a different note.

Using creativity in a good way, most of the time, it as the domino effect of being inspirational, funny, amusement and amazement. My mum told me she used to have fun listening to what I composed when I was sitting behind the passenger seats and singing about cars, vehicles and other transport. Of course, those intuitive, on-the-spot creation ability happens to most of the kid, before we grown up and being trained to think twice.

As we become teenager, adolescence then adult, being mature is the most distinct attributes as compared to a children. Because of our ability to think and to judge, complement with the social structure, peer pressure and the realm of reality, we are consciously restricting our thoughts when we deal with things. This is not totally a bad thing, but at times, it is quite a lost that we are gradually loosing the creativity that we used to have when we are younger.

Watched an episode of Animation (yes, I am still watching 'cartoons' in the eye of adults), and it sparked me on the interpretation of Thomas A Edison's quote “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.”. We always interpreted it as hard work usually will be the key to success, hard work matters etc, but the coach in the animation mentioned that the quote can be implied in a mean way that "one might not be able to succeed regardless how hard he/she had tried just because he/she is lacking of that 1%" (I know it sounds really negative and mean from the word but is really funny in the context of that episode). I just found that statement being creative in the sense that it interprets in a way that not the general public will think of because all these while, we have been "instilled" to think in a certain matter.

Release the creative soul in you =)

#61 Appreciation: Writing

I love writing, to be exact, I enjoy being able to express through words to convey message, to relate my thoughts, although miscommunication prone to happen since wirting is not embedded with tone as per verbal conversation. Well, there are input saying that we can express our words through symbols, yet is not applicable in every context.

If you have read through my previous post, I sort of repeated myself in a certain way that how much I enjoy when I received a Letter and being able to Read and Books. So I figure that writing, reading is in my soul, although when reality sets in, I tend to forgot what I am passion about. Yet writing/blogging this made me realized how long I have abandon my dream of being a renown author, writer, or even columnist -- about enjoying life and living the life in different perspective. I have to admit that my skills of expressing through words has been declining given the fact that I am not as strong willed like the successful one.

I really need to set things straight, given that this will be my final year of studies,  I shall not have other excuse of not committing in my interest thereafter...
