Japan - Snack Time! (2)

Matcha (Green Tea) Kit-Kat
How can you not have this Matcha Kit Kat when you are in JAPAN!! So yeap, I bought this twice in 2 weeks! Just couldn’t resist! In Sydney, this pack of thing cost at least $6 to $8 depending where you got it from. In Tokyo, you can get it at the convenience store at about 300 (approximately AU$3.50). I am looking forward to get to the Kit Kat flagship store!!

Cereal
Vege cereal! Isn’t this too healthy XD?

Japan - Snack Time! (1)

Omanju
One of the superior went on holiday and he treated the office staff with this! Honestly, I still don’t get what is the difference between the mochi that we normally know, and daifuku (I think this is just a chilled version of mochi). Yum!
お萩 Ohagi
Google told me is a bean cake. The concept is mochi or like omanju, but is different in terms of the glutinous rice is wrapped by the paste. Usually is the glutinous flour wrapped the paste like above, but this is the reverse. And is not glutinous flour, is glutinous rice!

Biscuits!
Just biscuits that I usually get when I am in Malaysia and in Sydney! I remember my grandma love the sesame one too!

Cup Noodle Experience

I came to Tokyo on a short notice, and didn’t manage to prepare much. I reported to work once I touch down, so no time for groceries, and most importantly, no cash. I sort of foresee that I will be on a tight budget (which is true) and expected to have instant cup noodles for the first few days, which I did. I heard and saw online that Japan has heaps of different version cup noodles, but somehow I didn’t manage to find those types. I ended up eating different variety of cup noodles, just to find those interesting one, although I already sort of ‘tired’ of it.  Missed out 4 of them at the moment :/

From Sydney to Tokyo - Shopping, Grocery-ing, Convenience Shop(-ping)

Coming from SEA country, then lived in Oceania for almost 4 years, and now relocating to Asia for a year. It is quite an experience I shall say and I just got lost as in culture shock or reverse culture shock then reverse culture shock again. Well, like you can see, I am FonCused. ^^

Just want to share and jot down my discovery :)

Shopping, Grocery-ing, Convenience Shop(-ping)

Shopping day is everyday including weekends! Unlike Sydney, despite weekends, departmental store just close as usual, like 5-6pm. Even though there is late night shopping on Thursday night, I doubted that I will walk around since I still need to work on the next day. So yeah, in Tokyo, weekends are just pack with people, from stores to public transport, which this is the bit I missed about home, yet can’t really adapt to it (because I used to the slow paced moment while in Sydney).

Automated Sushi Store - Genki Sushi

Since I am in Japan, how can I missed out Sushi?
I have been watching how advanced is the Japanese restaurant's set up and now I finally experiencing it for the first time. Thank God I was with a friend, otherwise it is kinda awkward if I went alone with a blurry look (since I dont speak Japanese). So I ended up just mimicking him ^^

I believe this Genki Sushi (aka automated sushi store) located in Shibuya, is one of the budget restaurant with good food, where the price range is starting from ¥129 to ¥300 over. Yep, it is also one of the tourist fav location. Evidence? According to Trip Advisor, It rank #19 out of 4824 restaurants in Shibuya!

Multilingual touch screen function for you to order food! Minutes later...."Bi Bi" the food is deliver via the automated machine and stop in front of you!! Then you have to click a blinking button in front of you to send the plate off back to the kitche ^^

I missed out my seafood chawanmushi :/ Anyway, including the above 3 with seafood chawanmushi, I spent slightly less than ¥700 for a meal :)

Transformer: Age of Extinction

I have the pleasure to watch this latest blockbuster in advance on 25th June. Quite a great experience in an Xstream screening with somewhat perfect visual impact.

I wouldnt want to disclose much about the content, dont want to be a spoiler :)

I enjoyed the plot, although there are parts where can be prolong a little, like between the fight (Might due to time restriction). To my surprise, there is not much liking from the 1st 2 movies, this is more like a stand alone movie.  It might be because of the core actor/actress were not involved in this movie and the story line was abit more about the leas's bravery etc. Interestingly, not much about Decepticon, and heaps of Autobot dont appear  in the movie :/ Yet I admit that the graphic and the visual of the automobile was pretty cool, and the appearance of dinosaur? Is pretty tricky.

In brief, the whole movie is about (plot) frame - betrayed - greed - fame - faith - gratitude - love - change - bravery - trust - loyal.

Life as a Negotiator

*I have the privilege of watching a movie for free in university some time last year. Is about negotiation (on life-death matters not those commercial). It was a great movie, the plot has it own twist in it. At the end of the movie, there is a guest speaker who will relate the movie content and the real-life experience. And here is some of the takeaway that I had. [p/s: Like my previous post, CSI is still one of my favorite drama series, so it is a no surprise that I enjoyed the session  :) ]*.

When negotiating, bring up open-ended question and importantly, listen their statement without judging them. When dealing with this life and death matter, one will need to build up rapport with them, to generate the trust among the both of them. Some basic idea about negotiation:
   ·         Never make a promise
(   As at the end, the offender will discover the truth that you won’t be fulfilling his ultimate request, and loses the faith in you.
   ·         Never be ‘deceptive’
   ·         Build rapport

Who are involved in a negotiation?
It is usually the local police commander that liaises closely with the negotiator and the negotiator will keep close contact with the technical people. It is not encouraged to change negotiator as the first negotiator has already build the rapport with the offender. Whether the negotiation is make or break, it all boils down to the senior negotiator, as he or she is the one who call the shot and it often based on the negotiator experience and not the police.

What happens during negotiation?
The negotiator will adopt the container negotiation approach, where the taskforce will quarantine the public with the ‘crime scene’, so that the offender is isolated with the public to reduce any further stimulation.

When the negotiator arrived to the location, the commander will brief the negotiator before the negotiation commences. This is important for the negotiator to understand the background of the offender, so the negotiation can be themed around the heart of the issue. Like mentioned, it is crucial not to be judgemental, instead, be objective and independent, so that one emotionally connected to it and thus easier to conduct the negotiation.

Meanwhile, negotiator will communicate with the commander or with psychologist if necessary using written notes to avoid communication disruption with the offender.

Who can be a negotiator?
Negotiator is usually a detective or a sergeant, one need to be on call so that they could head to the location directly. They are usually in their causal wear, able to keep calm and not rushing as these create pressure on the offender.

Since negotiator is a high stress level job, it usually comes in part time position and in rotation basis.

What it takes to be a good negotiator?
   ·         Communication skills is a must
   ·         Tolerance
   ·         Empathy
   ·         Patience (Especially you might need to talk to them for 14 hours straight or more)

It is not necessary to have a tertiary education to be want as negotiator needs more soft skills than the technical knowledge. Yet, various policing experience will be of great help during negotiation as one have witness all kinds of humanity from the best to the worst.

How to be a negotiator?
The recruitment of negotiator usually will be announced through internal portal, and you will need to go through 3 weeks training. You also will go through medical and work history check, and also any complaints filed against you. It is also vital for you to understand the your stress management capability.

NSW has this policy of not having force entry during the invasion. At the moment, NSW has done a great job for not having death in custody.

It is never easy to be a negotiator as ethics always come into place.  One has to always be remembered to never expense anyone, if forced to, do the greatest good for greatest number of people.

Reflection on Movie: Chef

Ever since I am studying in Sydney, I dont often go to the theatre for movie. Sole factor: price ~>.<~
Yet, I got a free movie voucher as a staff gift from the office, so I head to the cinema after work, despite I have to walk for nearly 20 minutes to the nearest cinema :))

Watched Chef alone, at the back of an empty theatre, well, literally empty since there is only a couple of people occupying each of the 5 out of 7 rows. Needless to mention about the storyline, since Goolge helped quite a bit. Quoting from IMDb:

Chef Carl Casper suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner, he is left to figure out what's next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife, his friend and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen -- and zest for life and love.
I would say this story draws one of the ideal life one can get. In fact, it is these kind of attitudes and courages that one will be encourage to have. I being a pessimistic person, but trying real hard not to, I always thinks that it is not impossible but it is hard. This is about losing control on one's life, when things just go wrong, nothing works out, you dropped hard on the floor from the height etc. And in a certain way, it does reflecting what had happened. The magnitude might not be as great as this, but it al depends on individual's life and perspective, and I could say that the pattern of it is definitely similar.

So, thoughts for the movie that I like, learned and realized:
1. Social media today is incredibly powerful, it can brings you up, and no doubt, it can throws you down. The power of sharing, retweeting, and is all about what others think (Might or might not be the fact of an issue). Is a double-edged sword,

水能载舟,亦能覆舟

2. Words hurt. Even more than the physical pain. The worst part of it, you cant argue with it verbally (referring to passive communication using words). You cant clarify it immediately, even you attempt to make correction to it immediately, because it subject to whether did the recipient read it.So be mindful with the words.

3. Friendship. Ideally, your best friend/supporter will be loyal to you, follow you and support you all the way through. Even if you are in deep sh*t. From the movie, you can see that one of the chef buddy has followed him and the other one didnt. Being emotional, you can say that the other one is a coward or doesn't value the friendship, but think about it, rationally, in reality, how many of your friends will do the same? Moral of the story is, treasure those friends that really back you up! (Doesnt mean that the rest are no body, just show extra appreciation to those will do so.) 帮助你是人情,不帮你是道理。

4. Dad, an influential individual. Regardless you are the daughter or the son, both parents definitely have certain influence over you. Here comes the biological inheritance, DNA talk etc. Besides this movie, backing up from other reality shows clips, parents occupation and future do highly influencing the child's future prospect, in particular, dad. He is the one that overpowering the potential path of their children.

5. Time spent together/Communication. Is all about the moment that you had with someone, be it father-son, husband-wife, employer-employee or all other sort of relationship. Time + communication. A definite combination for maintaining relationship. Especially when we are referring to those who really matters to us. Once neglected and ignored, there goes the relationship. From the movie - one second of everyday.

6. When you fall, think of why you started it. After the soaring heights, we tend to lose ourselves, being distracted with the fame, power, respect etc that we earned throughout. In an unfortunate event, once you fall, it is devastating. Now, it is about standing up from the mud despite the heartbreaking moment. Recall the reasons you chose the path, the reasons you made that choice. If you cant go further, revert back and start from the beginning, and work all the way up again.

7. There is no eternal enemy. Although you have been through a nasty moment with someone, being hurt or 'humiliate', there is no need to keep that negative feeling deep down. Because these guys, in future might be the one that help you out when you most needed. Put it in another way, the past is past. Look forward to another kind of meet up in future with your 'enemy'. (P/s: if he or she hurts you again, just ignore him/her and by pass them, your time worth much more than having to hate them).

8.Opportunity will come. There is never a dead end (unless you died). Keep looking out for opportunities! Even a small one! When you have build up the skills and accumulate the experience, better things will come along. Like the saying "Opportunity will come to those who are prepared".

9. Do what you like and trust yourself. Do what you enjoy and be the expert of it! Even if you fail, you know that your passion towards it will make you a pro! Like one conversation between the chef to his son - I might not be a good husband, I might not be a best father, but I am good in this, real good. I am good in what I do (cant remember the exact phrase, but something similar). All about confidence and self-esteem you have, and never afraid of climbing up again when you are at your worst. (Like the scene where he dine in in Miami with his exwife and ex father-in-law)

10. The working world. When you are out there, working for someone, the most you can do is to suggest, whether to do it or not, it all depends on your boss/owner of the business (or sometimes, your customer). Let just face it! You have no say, unless you are the boss. Welcome to the reality, the hard cold fact.

Btw, the food really looks good on screen, so make sure you had eaten before the show stars, otherwise, you will be drooling all the way till the end ;)

Gasping for Air

"Life is tough."

I need to get rid of these negativity.

>>"Life is challenging but I am up for the challenge."

Yes, I graduated. Before I officially end my student life, I am (slightly) packed with work, but mostly occupied by volunteering or society event. What make things worse is you got a team without synergy. So I "study-work-'work'", missing the "rest.

As a student we struggle to get a part time job, seeking balance between studying and working. Once you graduated, is only about working. Then you start to cater for work-life balance. I used to dream to become a freelancer. I can work whenever I want, wherever I want. I can choose to work when everyone is busying shopping, and shop when the rest working. Yet, reality is just too realistic. I end up need to take day off without pay just to see doctor or pickup parcel, since post office close exactly at 5pm. Spending without income. Nonetheless, I am still grateful I got a job (disregarding the pay).

So, I thought I finally can "work-rest", and I can give in the fact that I need to day day off just to do pick up from post office. Thanks to the urge to stay and the pressed for time, I enrolled into weekendS class. Note, is with the S. So I work 9-5 weekdays and need to study 20 hours from 8am-6.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. I cant be "anti social", so I have to meet up and keep in touch with the rest during dinner. Let's embed the return commuting and travelling time for about 1 to 2 hours per day (depending where is the dinner/grocery venue), and all these block-off time, with the assumption of me sleeping 6-7hours per day...I wonder how long I can hang on to it.

Stay Strong!

#100 Appreciation: You (And Me)

Well, if I address 'You', I sound so confident, since I expected 'You' as readers came to my blog and follow my post, which almost certain, this is not the case.

So, I end up thanking myself, for really committing is this despite that this is unrelated to academics or jobs and I still commit in completing this, without any return. So, I end up thanking myself for constantly doing this. I do run out of ideas at times, and I had delayed numerous time on the post, yet contemplate to complete what I have started.

I take pride in my principle despite that I am 'suffering' by it by starting too many things at once. Being capable in doing this, eg, joining 100 Days Project and keep up within the 100 days for 100 Appreciations, 100 blogposts, is a great achievements. Although I hope that I can drive some traffic to my site as well :)

One thing out of the bucket list then!

#99 Appreciation: Malaysia

*Ignore politics*

A place rich with culture, resources and food.
We have great delicacies, dances, celebrations, languages and also a fusion of everything. Is just the unique scenario and experience to have. No one can understand "Eh Kawan, jom Dinner kat restaurant ABC, dai kor kata tu ho jiak", if you are not one of them or staying long enough to understand the 'languages'

Is a great place to stay with, with different ethnicity friends, hanging out together, learning each other languages, eating each other traditional home-cook meals, celebrating each other festivals... Is just a colourful journey!

The sad fact she is being gradually 'destroyed' by those who are ruling her...

p/s: The death of 8 years old Yemen girl on her wedding night with her 40 years old husband news is a heated topic lately. To add on, I just feel glad that I am not born in that sort of society and I am healthily raised by my beloved family today.

#98 Appreciation: Family

I am thankful to have all my family members with living healthily and share my life journey with me, especially I am not prepare enough to face any 'separation', although often or not, is not one's call.

Besides my parents and siblings, I have plenty of aunts and uncles, and I specially felt for my single aunt, who has treated me and my brother as if we are her kids. She hardly resist our request, and she always is the one who fulfil our wishes. Sounds like Santa isn't? There is another well-to-do uncle, who treat us like buddy every time we meet. We always tease him, and ask him to buy us dinner (somehow he know all the great food places). Also, all charming cousins I have.

To extend the family range, I also grateful to have such nice grandparents, who gave birth to our parents and brought them up after all the struggles, before the country gain independence. Also, treat us much better than how they raise our parents (much stricter of course) :)

Love all of you~~

#97 Appreciation: Children

Got this 'Appreciation' from my mum.

She told me she is thankful to have children (me I assumed XD) although she has went through all those hard times and even has the post effect of going through operations. It has been a wonderful journey, raising kids and witnessing them growing and become a person with reliable and independent character, a citizen of the world. Not to forget the laughter and 'speechless' moment throughout the experiences, the ups and downs, yet it is a life journey worth having.

I love you as always too mum! Thanks for bringing me to this world :)

#96 Appreciation: Job

I used to dream of being a billionaire, a philosopher,  a Nobel prize winner, an author etc...

Coming back to reality, it is never easy to get that dream job. Too many people shared the same dream, and depending on your location, your presentation, your luck etc.

Living abroad and to secure a job (especially to secure a relevant job) is not as simply as ABC. It requires extensive hard work and to be mentally prepared for not being treated the same as the rest. I used rule out the job that is non-relevant to my background since I have faith in my capabilities and achievements. Like mentioned, we are at many disadvantages by simply based on the fact that we are not residents (although we would like to be one) and begin to accept whatever offer as time passed.

I found one job after 1.5 years and I appreciate the job opportunity although it might not being highly valued by the people, yet it enables me to earn a living and surviving within my needs, also, learning something totally new that I have never thought before :)

#95 Appreciation: Security Task Force

As in police, detective, solider, security personnel etc...

I salute their bravery, their sense of justice (might not applicable to all stated) and their hard work. Their job is never simple, is physically and mentally consuming job and what I appreciate them the most is the fact that they have chosen to place their life at the front line when dealing with the "villains".

Thanks guys! It might not be voluntary for all, but the fact that you have being trained and armed with "weapons" and own a duty of care to the public, is something worth grateful for.

#94 Appreciation: Motivations

A motivations is just like wishes, a sincere encouragements can empower you to go the extra miles in the path you pursuing to attain that goal that you desired.

Motivations can be from a praise, a comfort, a simple text message, a short call, a FB message... Simple thing that one could have done without knowing the impact, the strength and the vibe that one has transferred.

It reflects that how influential one can be and it also reveals who are your friends that stand by your side. Never belittle the power of a compliments, consolation or a few taps on shoulder, it could simply direct the negative flow away :)

#93 Appreciation: Tears

I never thought of tears as something to appreciate. Never thought of it.

But recently, I have bear too much of stress and pressure, my sense of responsibility took over my priorities in life, causing me to focus so much on the things that I held responsible to rather than what's important in my current stage of life.

I need a channel to release it, but not sure how. I have been grumbling/talking to friends, experiencing the crave for food etc... Nothing really help much. Until the time where I relaxed myself, watching a random dramas and variety shows, and I started tearing out of the blue. Is not that the shows are too funny or overly touching, I bet is just at that point of time, I am not that tense and all the tears and sweats that I held back was finally release...

#92 Appreciation: The Present

Past - A paint in your life journey that last forever.

Present - A scenery that you are looking at.

Future - A daunting/exciting/adventurous/uncertain/forward-looking thoughts

I like the example that someone told me before. "Who you are today is not determine by your past, but is your future that determines who you are today. For example, after days of working, you booked a tour and you are so hype up when the tour date gets nearer because you are looking forward to the trip! However, during the tour, you dont fully enjoy yourself because you keep counting the remaining tour days and dont feel enthusiastic anymore because you are going back to your routine."

I was pretty astonish when I heard that 'theory', and couldnt against that because it is somewhat a fact. Then, one simple thing that pop up into my mind... During the present, the simplest (yet the most difficult thing to do) is to be satisfy with what I have today and what makes me today. At this time, this moment, I decide what I feel, what I think and what I do.

#91 Appreciation: Confidence

Confidence and trust are inseparable. When people have faith and trust me, it will boost up my confidence in being who I am today. Confidence is a part of me that still need to be improved. I cant help but keep thinking the hurtful past that made me collapse and confidence is the thing that I am slowly recovering.

I admire people who can ignore the society perception, because they trust their capability. Not that I dont believe in myself, is just that at times, I will have self-doubt and start thinking all those energy-consuming thoughts. Is good to reflect during the doubting process, it needs to be limited so that one wont over-thinking it.

When one has the confidence, he or she will portray a better image leading to more trust being laid on them. Is a whole cycle thing, and I shall think less and BELIEVE in myself just like my friends have in me. ^^

#90 Appreciation: Fears

I hate fear, and I really do. I dislike the fact that because of fear I dont get to achieve what I want in mind.

A quote from TinyBuddha.com, one of things to be grateful in life is fear, because:
So you know your opportunities for growth
I agree to it, and why is it so is because we should view it from a more positive sense that fears can be an indication on what one is lacking in. We might not be a perfect being in life, but one thing for sure, when we can overcome the fears we had, we will experience additional joyful moment and improve who we are today.
